Batavia bookkeeper carries on family business

BATAVIA – A bookkeeping business that operates out of a home is looking to expand its reach and eventually move into a space in downtown Batavia, its owner said.

Jessica McGrail is the owner of Dollar and Sense Bookkeeping Inc. in Batavia. She offers multiple services from her home office, including bookkeeping, payroll, administrative services, QuickBooks and more.

“I decided that this was the time to start to grow a little bit,” McGrail said.

McGrail said her clients include Batavia businesses, such as Glen Galis Concrete Contractor and a few restaurants in Naperville.

McGrail’s mother, Jennifer Weber, started the business in 2000 under the name Geneva Business Services on Houston Street. McGrail worked for her mother on a part-time basis during her high school and college years, according to the business’ website.

When Weber died unexpectedly in 2009, McGrail said she lost her mother and her best friend. Weber’s clients at the time asked whether McGrail would continue her mother’s work. McGrail accepted the challenge and moved her family to Batavia.

“[It] is such a wonderful place,” McGrail said.

McGrail said she keeps flexible hours to be available for her clients and can help any business lower expenses, payroll taxes or liability and look for fraud.

Sometime next year, McGrail would like to move the business to an office space within Batavia, preferably in the downtown area.

Don't be so hard on yourself, outsource your Bookkeeping! September 16, 2015 It takes a lot to own your own business these days.  Between 60-80 hour work weeks (or more!), constant regrets and rejections, the pressure of decisions, financial inconsistencies, legal risks, and simply not being able to step away, running your own business can be stressful!    A great way to de-stress and take some of the pressure off is to outsource your bookkeeping!  This allows for so many positive things with your business and for yourself!!  Here are just a few reasons to outsource your bookkeeping:   - Most importantly, you are finally able to spend more time on what your business has been in need of instead of on your bookkeeping and payroll.   - The quality of your bookkeeping improves immensely when outsourced because it is in the hands of an experienced professional that will get you all the proper deductions and everything within the correct accounts.  In addition, the other processes within your business will improve by utilizing your in house staff to those areas needing attention.       - Within a few months (and through a P&L statement) you will see a cost savings when you outsource your bookkeeping, less hours are being spent on this expense  and their is no overhead when your outsource!!  A professional bookkeeper can do this in a fraction of the time of a full-time employee.  In addition, if you have been trying to do your books on your own, you will find that an outsourced professional bookkeeper will do the same work faster and more effectively, inevitably saving you time and money.    - Your business needs updated records, outsourcing your bookkeeping to a professional Bookkeeper can offer you that.   - Your outsourced Bookkeeper usually becomes more of your best friend :) We do more than just enter transactions, pay bills and give you a bottom line at the end of the quarter. We provide you with valuable financial reports on your business allowing you to see how you’re progressing financially.

QuickBooks Connect Chicago July 2015 - This seminar was so many things, inspiring, motivational, educational, eye opening, but most of all, a real changing point for myself and my business.  Hearing the stories that other small business owners had to share of their beginnings, their challenges and where they are now made me want to ask myself and other small business owners one question - Do you want to stay where you are in your business or do you want to grow and become what you know can be so much greater? All you need is more confidence and a great bookkeeper :)
